Finally, My Own Radio Station

By AnitoBopper, Dec.06, 2007

I was watching a tv show one Sunday evening and it featured a site where one can be an instant radio station programmer and choose whatever music you’d like to hear on the net and setup a playlist of songs from various artists and let it loop as long as you want.Nice!

Also, they already have ready made playlists you can choose from, just in case you don’t want to make list of your own.

Everything is instant nowadays and http://www.finetune.com/ is one site that will make you an instant radio station owner, well in cyber space of course, without the annoying advertisements and dj jibber jabber crap, not to mention the need for financial backing to set up such an endeavor.

I visited the site and started immediately. Registration is FREE. That’s an all time plus! All you need is a valid e-mail and you’re ready to go. On other sites, you need to be a paying member to listen to their playlists. This isn’t the case for finetune.

My only complaint is that you’re allowed to choose only three songs per artist on a single playlist. Finetune could have doubled that or something, considering an artist has several records/cds to his name.

But not to worry, all you have to do is make another playlist. It’s a bit time consuming though. But since it’s free, I’ll just have to live with it. If you’re not sure how the song goes, you can preview and listen to it for about 30 seconds and if it’s a keeper, just click on the plus sign and it’s now included in your playlist.

The search function helps you look for artists and the results also suggests other artists of the same genre just in case you might not be familiar with them.

However, there’s some kind of quirk in their search results, this is just in my case I suppose, because sometimes when I click on the cd covers something goes wrong and the website’s footer suddenly appears one third of the screen below and the site’s header and log out at the top disappears.

I’m using IE7. I’m not really sure if this happens with other browsers. I already e-mailed their tech support, but you know how it is. Other than that, as long as my playlist plays when I click play, I’m happy.

I’ve created a playlist called “Jazz Master’s Crib”. It’s a selection of mostly standard and contemporary jazz from artists like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davies, Thelonious Monk to Chick Corea, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, Michael Brecker, Steely Dan and a lot more.

Here’s the link if you want to listen to it - http://www.finetune.com

When I find more time, I’ll be updating the current one and probably add several more playlists, but in the meantime, it really is a joy listening to these tunes online. Local radio stations wouldn’t dare play these tunes on air. They’ll probably belly up if they did.

So if you’re into real jazz, hop on over and take a listen to - http://www.finetune.com/

Happy listening!

Update: I added my first Chillout Lounge a couple of days ago, around the second week of Jan., 2008. It's about 60 selections already. I'll add more soon.
